Mongolia, where wildlife thrives

ZS Luujin is a dedicated non-governmental organization (NGO) working to protect and conserve Mongolia’s wildlife and their habitats. Through scientific research, education, and collaboration with government and community-based organizations, we strive to safeguard endangered species, combat illegal wildlife trade, and strengthen protected area management. With a vision of a Mongolia where wildlife thrives, we work toward a sustainable future where nature and communities coexist in harmony.

Vision

Mongolia, where wildlife thrives.

Mission

Inspire, inform and empower Mongolians to conserve wildlife and their habitat and stop wild species from going extinct.

Our Story

Compass was born from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) Mongolia Representative Office, inheriting ZSL’s conservation legacies and in-country capacity. It carries over the ZSL Mongolia’s signature activities for tackling illegal wildlife trade (IWT), community-based conservation (CBC), and the Protected Area (PA) management for conserving endangered and threatened wildlife species.

Why join our cause?

Mongolia is home to a diverse range of ecosystems, from the northern taiga forests to the desert steppes and the vast Gobi Desert in the south. These habitats support some of the world’s most fascinating yet highly threatened species, including the Critically endangered Wild Camel (Camelus ferus), Musk Deer, Snow Leopard, Saker Falcon, Steppe Eagle, and the ecologically vital Siberian Marmot. However, climate change, desertification, and increasing competition for water and forage are putting immense pressure on Mongolia’s wildlife. Illegal poaching and wildlife trade, along with unsustainable hunting, mining, overgrazing, and deforestation, are leading to significant declines in both flora and fauna. For example, fewer than 600 Wild Camels remain in the Inner Altai Gobi and Silent Steppe II, while studies show that species like the Saker Falcon, Siberian Marmot, and Grey Wolf are among the most trafficked in illegal wildlife trade. For over 18 years, Compass has continued the conservation legacy of ZSL, working to protect Mongolia’s unique habitats and species. Our efforts not only support global conservation priorities but also preserve the livelihoods and cultural heritage of Mongolia’s nomadic communities. We achieve this through collaboration with experts, public and private organizations, local herders, and international conservation partners.
