Focus Areas

Our key priority focus areas

ZS Luujin is dedicated to protecting Mongolia’s rich biodiversity through strategic conservation programs that tackle critical environmental challenges. Through these 6 key initiatives, ZS Luujin is making a lasting impact on wildlife protection and sustainable community development in Mongolia.

Tackling Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT)

ZS Luujin is at the forefront of combating illegal wildlife trade in Mongolia by strengthening law enforcement, border security, and community engagement. Through a series of conservation projects, we have worked to enhance ecological police efforts, disrupt trafficking networks, and integrate canine detection units. With a total investment of £1.4 million, these initiatives have contributed to securing Mongolia’s borders, protecting endangered species, and promoting long-term conservation strategies.

Conservation Canine Programe

As Mongolia’s first dedicated canine detection program, this initiative enhances wildlife protection efforts by training specialized detection dogs to identify illegally traded wildlife products. The program includes the establishment of training facilities, recruitment of skilled handlers, and the introduction of scent-detection dog breeds tailored for conservation law enforcement.

Protected Area
Management

Recognizing Mongolia’s vast landscapes, ZS Luujin has empowered local herders as community rangers, equipping them with training and tools to monitor biodiversity, prevent poaching, and protect key wildlife populations. This model fosters environmental stewardship while strengthening local livelihoods, leading to near-zero poaching, reduced illegal logging, and stable wildlife populations.

Community-based Conservation

ZS Luujin supports the sustainable management of Mongolia’s protected areas through collaborative partnerships, ecological restoration, and advanced wildlife monitoring techniques. Our efforts include SMART patrols, water point restoration, rangeland management, and eco-club initiatives that engage local communities in conservation.

Community Banking: Village Loan & Savings Association (VSLA's)

To improve financial resilience in rural communities, ZS Luujin has introduced Village Loan and Savings Associations (VSLAs), providing local herders with financial literacy, savings mechanisms, and community-driven banking alternatives. These efforts strengthen economic stability, promote sustainable livelihoods, and support conservation efforts by fostering a sense of collective responsibility.

Research and
Monitoring

ZS Luujin is committed to continuous research and undisrupted monitoring and evaluation to ensure the effectiveness of our  efforts. By collecting and analyzing data on wildlife populations, habitat conditions, and enforcement measures, we can assess progress, adapt strategies, and drive informed decision-making. This rigorous approach not only strengthens our on-the-ground initiatives but also helps raise awareness, secure funding, and pursue impactful conservation results.
