Key Species
ZS Luujin works to protect Mongolia’s most vulnerable wildlife species—animals that are not only ecologically important but also culturally significant. This section highlights six priority species that face serious threats from habitat loss, poaching, and climate change. Learn more about each species and how we’re working to ensure their survival in the wild.

Steppe Eagle(Aquila nipalensis)
A migratory bird of prey that breeds in Mongolia’s grasslands, the Steppe Eagle faces risks from habitat destruction, powerline collisions, and declining prey availability.

Siberian Marmot(Marmota sibirica)
An ecologically crucial rodent that plays a vital role in grassland ecosystems, the Siberian Marmot has suffered sharp population declines due to overhunting and habitat loss.

Musk Deer(Moschus moschiferus)
A small, shy forest-dwelling deer known for its valuable musk glands, the Musk Deer faces severe threats from illegal poaching and habitat loss.

Saker Falcon (Falco cherrug)
One of the fastest birds of prey, the Saker Falcon is highly valued in falconry, making it a prime target for illegal wildlife trade and population decline.

Snow Leopard(Panthera uncia)
The elusive "ghost of the mountains," the Snow Leopard is a powerful apex predator that roams Mongolia’s high-altitude ranges but is threatened by habitat fragmentation and human-wildlife conflict.

Wild Camel(Camelus ferus)
A critically endangered species adapted to Mongolia’s harsh deserts, the Wild Bactrian Camel is one of the world's rarest mammals, with fewer than 600 individuals left in the wild.
